Short Answer Type Questions
1. Explain positive and negative aspects of equality.
Ans. It is a very tedious job to offer a precise definition of equality. However, it may be defined in respect of its positive and negative aspects. In the negative sense, it means no discrimination on any artificial basis as that of religion, race, caste, wealth and the like. In the positive sense, it implies that all are equal in the eye of law and that all have equal rights and opportunities.
2. What does this statement imply that equals should be treated equally, unequals unequally ?
Ans. Equality does not mean identical treatment. It is true that the rights available to one should be available to all. But equality exists al equal level. The rights available to the Prime Minister cannot be given to other ministers. But the rights available to one mimister should be available to all ministers Society has upper, lower and middle strata So equal treatment cannot be given to the people of different strata. However, as a human being the rights available to one person should be available to all.
3. Can the element of desert be involved in the real meaning of equality?
Ans. Desert means intrinsic quality or merit of a person. If all people are treated equally, it would mean injustice to the people of merit, quality and ability. American writers like Friedman and Hayek argue that a man of desert must be rewarded more than others. The genius and the fool cannot be equalised. But the English writers like Tawney, Barker and Laski donot accept such a contention, because the evaluation of a man's desert and then to reward him may not be impartial owing to the role of subjectivity and thereby be violative of the principle of equality.
