•Sustainable Developmemt

Sustainable development is in the news every day as the world copes with climate change, biodiversity loss, conflict and resource scarcity.
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

– World Commission on Environment and Development

Economists have also provided a definition of sustainable development as being an economic process in which the quantity and quality of our stocks of natural resources (like forests) and the integrity of biogeochemical cycles (like climate) are sustained and passed on to the future generations unimpaired.

Examples of Sustainable Development
• Solar Energy :

The greatest advantages of solar energy are that it is completely free and is available in limitless supply. Both of these factors provide a huge benefit to consumers and help reduce pollution. Replacing nonrenewable energy with this type of energy is both environmentally and financially effective.

• Wind Energy :
Wind energy is another readily available energy source. Harnessing the power of wind energy necessitates the use of windmills; however, due to construction cost and finding a suitable location, this kind of energy is meant to service more than just the individual.

• Efficient Water Fixtures :
Replacing current construction practices and supporting the installation of efficient shower heads, toilets and other water appliances can conserve one of Earth’s most precious resources: water. Examples of efficient fixtures include products from the EPA’s WaterSense program, as well as dual-flush and composting toilets. According to the EPA, it takes a lot of energy to produce and transport water and to process waste water and since less than one percent of the Earth’s available water supply is fresh water, it is important that sustainable water use is employed at the individual and societal level.

• Green Space :
Green spaces include parks and other areas where plants and wildlife are encouraged to thrive. These spaces also offer the public great opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation, especially in dense, urban areas. According to the UW-Madison Department of Urban and Regional Planning, advantages of green spaces include, “helping regulate air quality and climate … reducing energy consumption by countering the warming effects of paved surfaces … recharging groundwater supplies and protecting lakes and streams from polluted runoff.” Research conducted in the U.K. by the University of Exeter Medical School also found that moving to a greener area could lead to significant and lasting improvements to an individual’s mental health.

•Importance of Suistanable Development

The goal of sustainable development is to meet the needs of today, without compromising the needs of tomorrow. This means we cannot continue using current levels of resources as this will not leave enough for future generations. Stabilizing and reducing carbon emissions is key to living within environmental limits .

Importance of Sustainable Development can be seen upon through the following points :
• Sustainability is the concept that recognizes that natural systems are essential to provide both economic needs and quality of life.
• Sustainable Development connects whole space and time. It is not limited only to one community.
• It needs cooperation of people from different societies and geographies.
• It is a continuous process.
• SD contributes to growth, profit and development.
• It helps in developing eco-friendly global culture.
• It concerns for limited capacity of natural resources with social challenges facing humanity.
• It aims at protecting and managing natural resources for economic and social development.
• It considers the needs of future generation.

•Problems with Suistanable Development

Problem of Pollution : The main environmental problems in India relate to air and water pollution particularly in metropolitan cities and industrial zones.

In India, unplanned and uncontrolled growth of industries is taking place and poor condition of automobiles is creating huge atmospheric pollution regularly leading to huge environmental problems. The main atmospheric pollutants include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbon and metallic traces.

• Poor Management of natural resources : There is a degradation of natural resources which affects the poor adversely as they depend on them for their livelihood.

Large scale deforestation has been continuing since independence due to overexploitation and mismanagement of forest resources. Deforestation is still continuing at a rapid scale and the problem has reached to such a proportion that it has totally disturbed the ecological balance of the country.

There is a threat to biodiversity and inadequate system of solid waste disposal and sanitation with consequent adverse impact on health, infant mortality and birth rate.

In India, efforts are being made on for the environmental management in a sustainable manner.

• At all levels of education, provisions have been made for the knowledge of environment and its conservation.
• In the country many centres are providing special training for environment protection. The programmes of environmental awareness have been launched through media.

Sustainable development can be achieved through following effective ways :
1. In present context, the use of natural resources is excessive. So, we must take a step to minimize the excessive use of natural resources in order to preserve it from get extinct forever.

2. Achieving access to nutritional food and clean water for all, while protecting the biosphere and the oceans, requires more efficient and sustainable food systems – for example, by increasing agricultural productivity and reducing meat consumption.

3. Sustainable development is a societal challenge. Substantial advances in human capacity are needed through improvements of education and healthcare – resulting, among others, in higher income and better environmental decisions.

4. Responsible consumption and production cut across several of the other transitions, allowing us to do more with fewer resources – we need to adopt a circular economy approach and reduce demand.

5. It is must to conserve the national, cultural and traditional heritages for its self dignity.

6. There must be an effective and strict governing system for smooth development and administration.

8. Awareness programs must be conducted for the importance of sustainable development.

9. Having mutual and cooperative understanding among various people.

10. Providing formal as well as informal education to the illiterate people for better knowledge on sustainable development.

•Important Points

> It is the need of hour to adopt sustainable development.
> The concept of sustainable development is complex.
> Poor management of natural resources is the major cause of degrading environment.
> Achievement of sustainable development requires integration of three components – economic, environmental and social components.
> There are 17 goals in UN Sustainable development Agenda 2030.
